Roger Fortson death: Senior Airman shot and killed by Florida police identified by the Air Force

An airman stationed at the Special Operations Wing at Hurlburt Field, Florida, was fatally shot on Friday in an altercation with a sheriff’s deputy, as confirmed by the U.S. Air Force. Senior Airman Roger Fortson, aged 23, passed away at his apartment outside the military post, as confirmed by the U.S. Air Force in a statement issued on Monday.

According to a news statement from the Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office, a deputy responded to a disturbance and acted in self-defense when confronted by a 23-year-old man who was armed with a gun. Officials stated that Fortson was transported to the hospital, where he subsequently passed away.

Fortson was designated to the 4th Special Operations Squadron. The Air Force’s 1st Special Operations Wing stated that its main objectives are to offer casualty affairs service to the family, provide support to the unit during this unfortunate period, and ensure that resources are accessible to all those affected. The sheriff’s office stated that the deputy has been suspended from duty while an investigation into the incident takes place.
