Man died from suicide by jumping at Southbound Interstate-85 in Gastonia, NC – Exit 20 reopened

Authorities have declared that Interstate 85 in Gastonia has been reopened after being closed for a death investigation on Monday. The southbound lane near Eastridge Mall, namely at Exit 20 for North New Hope Lane, was restricted due to an ongoing investigation into a suicide. The delays stretched for several miles, encompassing at least McAdenville and Belmont. The closure of the road, which was expected to continue until around 3 p.m., ended earlier than expected at 12:45 p.m.

The closure is resulting in substantial traffic congestion in the vicinity. Drivers are urged to avoid the area whenever possible due to the slow movement of vehicles. As a substitute path, the North Carolina Department of Transportation advises drivers to utilize Exit 21 for Cox Rd, make a right turn onto Cox Rd, make a left turn onto East Ozark Ave, and thereafter rejoin I-85 South.

Another option is to use Exit 27 to access NC 273 heading south, then make a right turn onto US 29 (also known as US 74 or West Wilkinson Blvd) and continue in a westerly direction until reaching I-85. Gastonia Police have confirmed that a death has occurred in the area. The text refers to the Gastonia Police Department, specifically the Gastonia Police Department. Update: The lanes going southbound may be stopped for a few hours.
